Turley-Areal Mannheim – Urban density meets intelligent mobility

A new urban quarter with around 800 residential units is being built on the former site of the Turley Barracks in Mannheim. Historic buildings, modern architecture and innovative mobility solutions merge here to create a lively urban space with a high quality of life. The project impressively demonstrates how conversion, densification and mobility can be harmonised.

History meets the future

Turley Barracks looks back on an eventful history: originally built as the Kaiser Wilhelm Barracks in the 19th century, the site served various military purposes, most recently as a US base until 2007. Today, the listed sandstone buildings characterise the new district and form a striking urban edge. Equipped with balconies, parasols and greenery, they are now part of a lively residential environment. The neighbourhood combines old and new: modern residential buildings and social facilities are being built alongside the historic buildings.

Mobility reimagined

A central element of the project is the Turley Parking neighbourhood car park. Located beneath construction site IV, it offers over 200 public parking spaces. To accommodate as many vehicles as possible in a confined space, the semi-automatic WÖHR Combilift 542 parking solution is used here. A total of 11 systems provide 137 additional parking spaces – doubling the capacity in the same area.

While conventional underground car park solutions are used in other areas, Combilift technology demonstrates how innovative systems can help relieve pressure on urban space. Less above-ground traffic means more space for people, green spaces and social interaction.

The Turley site is a successful example of future-oriented urban development: historical identity, modern architecture and intelligent mobility solutions create a neighbourhood with a high quality of life.
